What Gets You Up In The Morning

Besides the sun, your kids screaming in your ears, your dog….what is your real motivation to get the day started?

We all need some sort of motivator to get us up in the morning and get the day started.

For me it’s getting up early (530am) and taking advantage of the hours before you really get going.  I’ll do some stretching and breathing exercises for about 30 minutes.  This includes yoga moves.  Just focusing on myself during this time is a great way for me to be at peace and ready for the day.  I’ll then do my morning routine of 60/40/80. If I have some more time (usually if it’s before 7am and I have about 15-20 min) I’ll do a meditation session.  I’ll try to do all this before my wife and daughter wake up.

Now I’m ready to take on the day!

What Time Do You Get In To Work?

Before Internet, email, laptops, iPhones, etc we all had a need to be in an office, on time and for a set period of time, usually 9-5.  Haven’t those days gone?
Unless your in the service industry where you are expected to be there during opening and closing hours, I would expect that all businesses should adapt to this flexible working hours.  Now I am not saying that you should always work from home and not show up to the office.  I am suggesting that it shouldn’t matter what time to show up or leave the office as long as you are not late for meetings and your work quality and promptness is not affected.
We all lead busy lives outside of work.  And when you have a family that all of a sudden becomes priority.  You want to take your kids to day care in the morning.  You want to pick them up or at least see them for dinner and before they go to bed.  You don’t get those times back.
Back when I was a baby, I understand that my parents had to sacrifice a lot in order to raise me and my sister.  However without all the technology we have to day they still managed to dorm quality time with us.
Now that we have all these things to make our lives much more flexible we should embrace it and adapt this to our lives so that we can enjoy the simple things in life that we might miss.
Enjoy life.  Control your own destiny. Don’t be a nusance.  Contribute. And most of all SMILE ?

What’s Your Job Title

How important is your job title to you? It shouldn’t matter.  Though many people place a lot of importance on this.

I would add though it probably depends a lot on the organisation you work at.

I think what you contribute is more valuable than your title.  Unfortunately, people easily assume your title means you have earned it.  Again probably depends on the area of work or type of organisation you are at.

In my field and industry, at the time of writing, it really doesn’t matter.  Head of, Director of, blah blah blah doesn’t mean they know their supposed area of expertise.  The only benefit I see is the perception of others of your importance to the organisation.  What they don’t see is the influence that a manager, analyst or advisor can have on the decisions the ‘Head of’ makes.

The expectations that come with the ‘Head of’ title may also put undo pressure on the individual that doesn’t actually deserve the title.

Perhaps, we need to assess our titles and call everyone an associate so that we are in fact on a level playing field and promotions, bonuses, and pay rises are based in contribution and meritocracy.  We only need to identify who the CEO is really,

I think that we are all smart enough that when in a group we all know who the leader is.  We don’t need to label each other especially when it’s not earned or deserved.

What do you think?

Weekend After Thoughts

Unfortunately in the world we live in we have to co-exist with people that are just plain rude.  I am not saying I am perfect cause nobody is.  The hardest part for everyone is to, as Queen Elsa of Arendelle would say ‘Let it go.’  (Influence from my daughter’s current obsession with Frozen – thanks Disney.
So that’s what I am doing.  And by doing that I can get in with my life.  Forgive those who just do not know and bless them for they may just be having a bad day.

These were the two petty incidents over the weekend.

1. Someone parking in the no parking zone in my apartment building garage.

2. Some guy that gave me attitude as I try to get by in a tight store with my buggy. (I didn’t have a picture of this but I think my daughter in a work out suit will help me forget about it!)

Have a great week everyone!  Do something nice for someone.

60/40/80 Morning Routine

So I call this my morning routine.  Been doing this when I know I may not be going to the gym or yoga class.  Also I will do this as part of my daily exercise.

Core is key.  I’m no fitness expert but can tell you from my own results that doing this can bring results.

So what’s this routine? Simple.

60 Sit ups (may not start with this number so start with a goal in mind like 20 at first)

40 Jack knife sit ups (this is the one where you sit / balance on your bum with your legs up and bent.  Crunch in and out)

80 push-ups with one leg crunch (hard to describe but essentially you do push-ups with one leg up and one leg down.  The leg up crunches in and out as you push up and down. Switch at 20 intervals.  The first and last 20 are standard push ups with both legs down)

Do this 3 times.

Results guaranteed.
